KTC Announces New Line of Robots
for OSB Industry
 
KTC Industrial Engineering has announced the release of a line of robotics it developed in partnership with Nova Robotics for use in OSB production. The line of high-temperature robots allows for minor repairs on daylight presses at full operating temperature. The robots can scan the inside of a press, weld out and grind smooth platen surfaces, drill out vented platens and clean steam injection ports without requiring any cooling of the press. KTC is supporting Nova in implementing the robots in mills and training mill staff to use and maintain them.
 

 
 
 
Globe Machine Hires New Sales Manager
 
Globe Machine recently hired Josh Hockman as its southern region sales manager representing all of Globe’s business sectors. He brings with him knowledge in the industrial engineering sales field. Hockman, who recently relocated to Nashville with his family, will make Tennessee his home base.
 

 
 
Sansin Releases Precision Coat Line
 
The Sansin Corporation announced the recent release of its Precision Coat line of products formulated for pre-finishing and machine application. Sansin’s range of factory finish products include undercoat treatments, interior and exterior factory finishing systems, preservatives, fire retardants and specialty topcoats for all types of wood substrates. Sansin’s factory finishes deliver high performance and durability in low-VOC, water-borne formulas for modified, engineered and specialty woods.
 

 
 
Dieffenbacher Supplies the First CPS+ to China
 
For the fourth time in four years, Chinese straw-based particleboard specialist Wanhua Ecoboard has ordered a straw-based particleboard plant from Dieffenbacher. The greenfield project at the Tonglin site in the Anhui province is scheduled to start production in December. Highlighting the order is a 28-meter-long CPS+, the first of Dieffenbacher’s new generation of continuous presses to be delivered in China. Equipment for flaking, including three MRZ 1500 knife ring flakers with the FlowOptimizer material feeder, were also ordered along with a dryer, forming station and forming line.
 

 
 
Combilift Celebrates Opening
of New Production Plant
 
Combilift recently celebrated the opening of its new 46,500-sq-meter production factory in Monaghan, Ireland. With 11 acres of space, it is one of the largest manufacturing operations under one roof in the Republic of Ireland. The new factory will enable Combilift to double its output in a single shift across all production lines. Four 90-meter moving assembly lines produce a finished truck every 15 minutes.
 

 
 
Axalta Expands Industrial Wood
Manufacturing Capability
 
Axalta has increased its manufacturing capability for its global industrial business by investing in the 56,000-sq-ft Northern Stacks complex in Fridley, Minn. Axalta will use the facility for research and development, focused application work for its Industrial Wood coatings business, and warehousing and coatings production across its focused business segments. The building will begin production trials this month.
 

 
 
SonicAire Introduces New Fan
 
SonicAire Integrated Solutions and DEMCO recently installed a new electric carriage and new backup roll for the veneer lathe at Hood Industries’ plant in Beaumont, Mississippi. In addition, the Altec team installed a new Linden log ladder, a new XY scanner, and charger and lathe controls. Hood’s existing clipper also received a new electric servo upgrade package. The installation is the first since Altec and DEMCO merged in 2016, the first complete carriage Altec has supplied since the merger, and the team’s first clipper scanner install in the South.
 

 
 
Evertree Offers Solution to Reduce
VOCs in Panels
 
Evertree recently announced that it has developed a solution it says will reduce the presence of petroleum-based resins in wood-based composite panels. Marketed under the SynerXiD brand, the solution contains a resin additive obtained using rapeseed protein, with a goal to control the generation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
 

 
 
Argos Solutions Expanding to North America
 
Norway-based Argos Solutions AS recently announced that it is expanding operations to North America with the opening of the Argos Solutions LLC branch in Apex, N.C. The new office will support future expansion in the U.S. as well as Canada, Mexico and eventually South America. The new U.S. branch will be managed by Richard Lepine, who has 20 years of experience in the wood composites industry.
 

 
 
TIP Changes Name to SMARTECH
 
TIP-The Industry Pivot has changed its name to SMARTECH. Based in Israel, SMARTECH offers wax suspension systems to production lines in the engineered wood products industry. The company is also expanding its footprint to Asia and Europe.
 

 
 
Costa Sanders Completing Fourth Manufacturing Facility
 
Costa Levigatrici, the parent company of EWTA member Costa Sanders, is in the final stages of completing its fourth manufacturing facility in Sandrigo, Italy. The new facility has a manufacturing floor of almost 54,000 sq. ft. with an internal working height of 31 ft. at the crane level and a total inside clearance of 40 ft. The facility will be used to manufacture Costa Levigatrici’s complete range of large panel machines for both wood and metal. In addition, it will provide the capacity to assemble complete sanding lines with multiple machines operating at more than 100 feet per minute.
 

 
 
Raute Hires New Regional Sales Manager
 
Raute announced that it has hired Trevor Wendt as a regional sales manager. Wendt has more than 20 years of experience in the wood products industry and will manage the Pacific Northwest region. Wendt returns to Raute after previous employment at the company from 2000 to 2005.
 

 
 
Dominion Chemical Expansion Adds Space
to Original Building
 
The Virginia office of Dominion Chemical recently completed a remodel of its original building, occupied since 1964. The 2,000-sq-ft addition doubles the size of the office complex. The company employs 27 people at its home office in Petersburg, Va., office, and seven at its Dominion of Georgia location.
 

 
 
Steinemann Finds Success With First-Ever Sanding Symposium
 
Steinemann Technology USA held its first-ever sanding symposium in Mooresville, N.C., in June. Thirty-seven participants attended the two-day event, which was offered as an advanced training course. The symposium covered the components of the sanding machine, the manufacture of sanding belts, optimization of the sanding process, and identifying and preventing sanding errors, among other topics.

Design Team Chosen for APA Lab Expansion
 
APA – The Engineered Wood Association recently selected the design team for its upcoming lab expansion. MSGS Architects of Olympia, Wash., is the project architect and PCS Structural Solutions of Seattle is the project engineer. The $4.5 million project includes structural modifications to 25 percent of the current floor area to create a 70-ft by 75-ft “strong floor.” The roof will also be raised to 40 ft directly above the expanded floor space, allowing for testing of taller assemblies.

Short Course Series
 
The Wood-Based Composite Science Short Course series, developed in partnership with the Oregon Wood Innovation Center and the Wood-Based Composites Center, provides mill operators as well as career professionals with a fundamental knowledge of wood as an engineering material in the manufacturing of wood-based composites. APA Revises Technical Note on Formaldehyde
 
APA — The Engineered Wood Association has revised the technical note Formaldehyde and Engineered Wood Products to include new national regulatory activity on formaldehyde emissions. Under the new EPA Composite Wood Product Formaldehyde Standard, prefabricated wood I-joists, wood structural panels, structural composite lumber, glued-laminated timber and other structural engineered wood products are exempt from ongoing testing and labeling. As with other APA publications, it may be downloaded from the resource library at www.apawood.org.
